This must be over thirty years old. At least this was Crouchs position then. I was writing a column for a glossy called International Musician and Recording World. I did a five-word review of Man With A Horn which was the his first release after coming out of retirement and his first release of his last period. The rieview read: What a bunch of crap! Still I had to address Crouchs rap. Yes, folks, Miles Davis was trying to sell records and for my taste he wasnt really doing anything new and his music didnt except on very, very, rare occasions reach the level of artistry and profundity of his jazz period. However, my point was that Miles Davis didnt owe anybody anything. He had already done so much for jazz and American music, that if anyone deserved to be a millionaire, then he did. So, I agree with Crouch that Davis was consciously trying to be a pop star but, like Mtume said, still was adding some new words to the vocabulary. Miles Davis didnt owe Crouch anything and Mtume doesnt owe anybody any explanation.
