This new report says that 2.5 million children (1 in 30) are homeless in the U.S.! It was done by a federally funded program called the National Center on Family Homelessness (NCFH). However, in 2013, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), found that number to be only 130,515. The NCFH downplays the accuracy of HUDs calculations because it conducts an annual one-day count of homeless people that encompasses shelters, as well as parks, underpasses, vacant lots and other locales. NCFH, on the other hand, also includes homeless families who are staying in cheap motels or doubling up temporarily in the homes of friends or relatives. So... apparently, there were 24,869,485 homeless children sleeping indoors on that night in 2013. The NCFHs report (Americas Youngest Outcasts) shows that states like California, Nevada and New Mexico were also on the worst list when it came to child homelessness. Which leads me to wonder, what have we been hearing about in the news lately that have these two things in common? These states, and children? Illegal immigration. This explains the discrepancy in numbers and the surge in the homeless, especially children. HUDs data shows that from 2007 to 2012, there was a 3.7% decline in homeless families, and a 13.1% decline of the overall unsheltered homeless population. The NCFHs data shows that just in the one year from 2012 to 2013, child homelessness increased by 8 percent nationally. But yet, president Obama is set to begin using his executive power to grant amnesty to 5 million illegal immigrants. As a society, were going to pay a high price, in human and economic terms. < (From the article) This is not just a homeless problem, this is an immigration problem. And raising the minimum wage will not help.
