This old red brick and concrete cistern was built in 1927 by my Grandfather, Lester J. Russell and a hired hand....purpose for the cistern was to catch rain water that ran off the roof of the house and into gutters...the water then flowed through a down spout to the ground and then went into a pipe that sent it to a small red brick sand filtering box, before entering the concrete lined cistern....the cistern is quiet large and deep...there was no good water to drink for the family and therefore Grandpa built the cistern....my earliest memory of the old home place that stood there was in the middle 40s and was later occupied by numerous families before it became unfit to live in....we were lucky enough to purchase the property where the cistern stands today....(My mother was 8 years old in 1927)....
