This one is definitely on my desert island list. A classic. Just re-watched it again, having not seen it in some time. Its very different in pacing and style from modern movie storytelling. Almost like an opera or a play. The performances are great, by a number of surprising actors who later went on to do many other great films; not the least of which are Helen Mirren, Liam Neeson, and Gabriel Byrne. Nicole Williamson will always get a hat tip from me as the definitive Merlin. He owned that role so completely, much as Ian McKellan owns Gandalf. Also, each time I see this movie, I am struck by the symbolism. In almost every scene, there were symbols of one sort or another. Sometimes so subtle, even after many successive viewings, I am only now seeing them. Terrific stuff. A bold tale, told boldly!
