This one left me weeping in sorrow and shaking with anger. How many people will we allow the police to kill without facing the consequences? The first police murders I remember hearing about were in my neighborhood, in 1965-1966. A teen-aged Latino gang kid was shot by a Chicago cop. Eyewitnesses saw the boy running away, saw him get shot in the back, saw the cop drop a throwaway gun on the boy. The community held marches, protests, and vigils. Nothing was ever done to the murderer. The police investigated it themselves and declared it a justifiable homicide. Within a few months, a teen-aged Appalachian white gang member was shot by the Chicago police. This time they picked him up, threw him in the back of the squad care and left the car parked there till the kid died. I dont even remember them going through the motions of an investigation that time. Those were the first two cop killings I remember hearing about. They were by no means the last. And it is we the people who allow the police to beat Occupiers and other nonviolent protesters, to jail people on trumped up charges, to kill people of color and political activists with impunity. Its on us folks. We allow it.
