This one specifically goes out to the wonderful people over at Maris place this fabulously beautiful evening as we told the Passover story with a few twists and even the mention of this historic uprising which ultimately resulted in the birth of the State of Israel. On the night of April 19, 1943; a new flag flew over the remains of the Warsaw Ghetto; crafted by the defiant ghetto fighters who were either murdered in the bunkers and sewers as the Nazis later moved to raze the entire Ghetto to the ground. It flew next to the red and white flag of the free nation of Poland which they hoisted above the burning Ghetto. The flag was a field of white cloth with two lateral wide blue stripes and in between them a Star of David. This flag lives on today through history; as the national flag of Israel. Our gathering this evening extended the flag of pure defiance to the victims of genocide happening on our planet right this minute; to the oppression of peoples and cultures who deserve and want only to live in peace and freedom. So its a very special moment to recall this historic event in the context of the gathering that just took place here in El Pueblo Viejo in Tucson. Thank you so much to the friends new and old who managed to endure my footnotes as I tried to convince myself that I am actually interesting to hang around with. The REAL treasure of the evening was Maris Moms Caponata. WOW!!! What a lovely Seder indeed! Mari, Linda, Jeffrey, Amanda, Julia thank you so so much for such a wonderful and reflective set of moments of faith, enlightenment, laughter, and all that food!!! (There will be a surprise quiz on all of the subjects we covered; so make sure you refer to the voluminous notes you no doubt took and filed with the course materials......)
