This ones especially for Madhura, Deborah, Lali and Madhurima. Share your stories, please! I was assured that after being neutered, my dogs would become more playful and sweet. In retrospect, I think a better word would have been warned. Its been a week since the surgery, and our flat is overrun with unnaturally energetic and playful dogs. Where three instalments of run-about time per day more than sufficed earlier, the current requirement is closer to five, and even then the two prance about the flat unfazed, instead of collapsing, as they used to, into fluffy heaps on the cool tiled floor. Theyve also become way more enthusiastic about snacks. Where earlier Shorshu wouldnt want to finish even her two regular meals - much less the third - and sat indifferently beside our lunch and dinners, now she literally climbs all over me to taste at morsels in my hand, licking her chops over and over. Chocolate, chapati, whiskey, curry, fritters, omelette, desi mithai - she makes no distinction. Plus last night, Kaju climbed into my lap after a good four months. While this flooded me with cuddle-laced dopamine, it also made my legs go numb, because the boy, in contrast to a puppy smaller than my tiny forearm, is now almost 20 kilos of muscle. As much as I adore my now joyous and hyperactive dogs, for the sake of the upholstery (three shredded cushions, one torn bedsheet) and undisturbed sleep, Im hoping this happy high wears off soon.
