This ones the matriarch. Each day as I drive by the holden area for first yr heifers, I see her standing there at the southwest corner lookin out towards the way it used to be. She is the last of her kind not the biggest horns but a beautiful coat; shes the las long horn on the range in these parts. 18 yrs now shes been here. Grandpa brought themin kinda to give some of the old school back to the place. Shes alone now, but I see her staring out and I wish I could open the gate, but I know the bossed get riled for shes all thats left of her pa. I wonder what shes looking at or seeing maybe shes remembering the old day when she was as wild as the deer and pronghorn that roam here. Maybe its the sweet clover at the spring in lost canyon where the oak tree shades the grass and the waters sweet and cold as can be. Or maybe all the times she led the herd from range land near and far where sweet dime weed and prairie rose grow or the scars on her hip from that big cat that tried and failed to bring her down. I dont know but she was the lead cow on many a drive and if she could talk id listen for she is the matriarch of this spread. Her blood runs through all the cows on this land. She no longer has her own to care for; they put her in charge of the first yr heifers now she teaches them the way of mothering and surviving. How times have changed she once led all thru feast and famine showed them the sweet grass and springs only the deer and coyotes new shes forgo more than we might ever know for shes the matriarch of this whole- land. Id set her free ifn I could just to see where shed roam. See if she remem- bers her way home back to the free and wild ways of her youth and if she still could lead id bet a months pay on it you know for she is the matriarch of were she roams...
