This part of my life... this part right here? This is called happyness. - Christopher Gardner (The Pursuit of Happyness) I am convinced, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that happiness should be clear and present. It should not be a distant treasure long for, but recognized, experienced and savored in the now. It should not merely be the thing hoped for and enjoyed at the end of the journey, but kindled as the journey is determined. It’s so easy to think about the things we want, and allow ourselves to believe that we will be happy only when we have them. Tomorrow is not promised. We must find opportunities to enjoy where we are now and be happy knowing that if it’s good now, it will only be better once the dream is realized. “Someday” and “Happily Ever After” … started yesterday. Through rain, sleet, snow… or the on the sunniest of days, the postal service will never deliver happiness to your door. We simply can’t wait for happiness to be FedEx to us, but each day we should awake mindful of the opportunities we have to create, radiate and enjoy this thing called happiness. It is written in The Epistle of James, “Faith without works is dead.” We must begin the WORK of being happy. Can you handle this… do you get it? Happiness is yours to create… it’s yours to radiate … and yours to enjoy. Not only are you are the creator and fulfillment of your own dream, but your own happiness. In my work, Ive watched children die with smiles on their faces. Likewise, Ive watched the old die with heavy hearts of despair after living a long life chasing what seemed to them an elusive promise. They fell prey to the “light at the end of the tunnel” mentality, failing to enjoy the ride through the burrow. If happiness can only be achieved outside of the tunnel, if we never make it through it, we would never experience happiness. “Sometimes that light at the end of the tunnel is an oncoming train.” - Charles Barkley We shouldnt go to our graves waiting for someday, waiting for God to move, to win the lottery, or for others to give us favor before we can know happiness. We must accept that God has already moved, favor has already been granted, and someday is now. Ultimately, the nouns (people, places, and things) pass from us, and we find ourselves with ourselves rediscovering a new reality. Whatever life gives us.... we have to examine it closely to find a reason for hope. Hope is the very thing that the Creator never takes from us. It is also the very thing that waters the seed of our souls and allows happiness to germinate. We should strive doggedly to achieve our goals and make it to the top of the mountain; we must also appreciate the climb. We must recognize that happiness is not WHEN… but NOW. If we should die on the side of the mountain… let it be with a smile on faces. Let it be said for us, that happiness was not an occasional experience, but the reigning principle of our lives. This part of your life... this part right now... what do YOU call it?
