This particular opinion will no doubt irritate quite a few people, so I will blame it on Percy Bakker because everybody likes him. And, he gave me the idea anyway. UNDERPASS TO NOWHERE The Ranchero Railroad Underpass is without a doubt a wonderful addition to Hesperia and, for that matter, the High Desert. When the Ranchero Freeway off ramp is completed and Ranchero becomes five lanes, it will be even better. Nonetheless, once past the railroad, Ranchero dumps into residential neighborhoods. What to do? What to do? How do we get folks to Rock Springs Road and on the Apple Valley? Continue down Ranchero past the junior high school and left to Rock Springs? Make Danbury a higher speed thoroughfare through a residential neighborhood? I don’t believe that either of these is the best solution. But, we have a natural solution that solves all the problems. It is an underutilized golf course. A four or five lane road down that gulley straight to Rock Springs would not only solve the problem, it would further greatly reduce travel time; greatly enhance safety, particularly for children; eliminate noise and pollution; and be quite aesthetic. With a few changes, the golf course could remain underutilized. Fewer Hesperia residents would be imposed upon. It wouldn’t be an overwhelming engineering feat. Drainage could be maintained. And, I, like the lion’s share of Hesperia’s residents could continue to use the gold course as we have in the past … never. Then we would have an underpass to somewhere. Larry Sunderland
