This particular write up is dedicated to all the Mumbaikars/Bombayites. Any decent local worth his salt has devoured Frankies at some point in life. I remember, as a child, going to eat this delicious snack with my uncle along with my brothers. We had a ‘Snack center’ near Brabourne stadium, Churchgate next to K. Rutom’s kulfi house that served these hot and made to suit your spice level. This was then followed by Ice cream sandwitch called ‘Pista Biscuit’ at K Rustom’s (but that’s another story)! So what’s a Frankie? It is a well-loved street food that originated back in the 1960’s or earlier in Old Bombay. Typically made with Indian flatbread (not chapatti or roti, it is a thicker version of chapatti made with white flour) that is roasted on the frying pan along with a coating of beaten egg and stuffed with a variety of delicious spicy fillings such as chicken, mutton, potatoes and paneer. It is then seasoned with salt, mango powder, vinegar with chilies and onions to suit your taste. Eaten as a roll, it is perfect as a fast snack or consumed as an alternate to lunch or dinner. We typically make this with the chicken stuffing or Paneer/potato stuffing if there are any vegetarian guests requesting for it. Accompany it with a chilled bottle of beer or a cold cocktail such as a mojito and nothing can go wrong! This is a favorite at home with the kids especially Aniket who loves to eat these when he comes home for the holidays. Frankies below were made over this weekend and specially requested by Ashaen Patel and Aniket Borkar! Bon Appetit.
