This past Friday my boys held an event to showcase what theyve been doing with the Pride Chess Club they created a month ago. They handled everything from setting up, planning, buying supplies, raking the leaves, creating speeches, and even making a video presentation. The day of the event it was a breathe of fresh air to see these kids transforming into young men, dressed in white collared shirts and black slacks for the first time. I could pick up on some of the nervousness in their eyes and demeanor. I asked the Ultimate Question and was dumbfounded when they responded to what I obviously never considered...This was, all except one out of 15, 1st time ever presenting anything in front of people. Why didnt I think about that? Most of my boys cant stay in after school programs long enough because of their behavior. All of them except for one has been kicked of out regular school at some point in time, and some out of school altogether. School assemblies and clubs were out of the question for them. But to see these young men in action, greeting guests, directing cars to parking spaces, giving speeches, serving food, You Couldnt Even Tell. I chose the game of chess for these young men, because it is the least expected game that others would think they would be capable of mastering. I looked back to 4 weeks ago when I asked my young men, What is your deepest fear? When I asked them today, after them seeing their true selves. The answer was, Our deepest fear is Not that we are inadequate, Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. Yes Indeed! Salute to the Kings and Queens!
