This past September, the U.S. Army put out a call for female soldiers to volunteer to attend Ranger School. The United States Army Rangers are an elite unit and the Army’s “premier direct-action raid force.” In other words, the Rangers are called into the height of war via land, sea, or air to conduct lethal and complex joint special combat missions. The regiments are located in four locations, all are volunteer, and all male. Now, the Army is considering whether to allow women to participate. The response to the call for volunteers was surprising and overwhelming. There were so many applicants they had to cull the list to just 160. Last week they announced that 60 women have been selected to attend the spring Ranger School assessment this April. In addition, there will be 31 female soldiers who will act as observers and advisors. These 31 soldiers have already participated in a strenuous week long training to acclimate them to the physical and mental challenges soldiers endure during training. They will be there to provide insight for training instructors, but will not be participating in any assessments.
