This past Sunday morning, a crowd gathered at SMCA for the Walk for the Water 5K, an event that raised money to buy clean water filters for families in the Dominican Republic. Ann Easley, Ellie Roland, Sydney Spagnola, and Rebecca Wells – SMCA juniors – made friends with the Dominican Republic families they spent two weeks working amongst last summer. While on the service trip, as they helped plant trees and build a school, the girls came to realize that these families, most with young children, did not have safe drinking water. The girls raised $4500 or enough to purchase water filters for 100 families. “The best part is that Walk for the Water isn’t an anonymous donation,” the girls explained. “The water filters will go to people we met, we visited their homes, played with their kids, and worked in their neighborhoods. So this is very personal for us.”
