This past Sunday, the Consul General of South Korea presented the Ambassador of Peace medal to Korean War veterans at the Bob Hope Theater in Stockton. The Consul General asked me to present the certificates, and I was more than honored to do so. We presented more than 60 of the beautiful awards to our veterans and their families. In a wonderful ceremony, we honored the more than 40,000 Americans killed or missing and more than 100,000 wounded in the Korean conflict along with the veterans present. It was truly touching for me to thank each veteran and hear their stories and sense their gratitude to be recognized for their service in that difficult and costly war that spared the citizens of South Korea the unspeakable tyranny still suffered by the people of North Korea. The fact that the government of South Korea is reaching out now, 60-years after the conflict, shows that they are still grateful for the tremendous sacrifices made by our soldiers and their families. The stark differences between the North and South of the Korean peninsula illustrates how important freedom and free enterprise is in the prosperity of a people. Our soldiers can be very proud of what was accomplished.
