This past week put into focus what family is all about; it is not the traditional definition, but it is a group of people who are linked through marriage, and birth, and adoption, and all sorts of different routes we have taken to connect to each other. Our family screams diversity of all kinds, and we stay together and love each other through our most lovable and our most unlovable moments. Although relationships change over time, we remain family because we choose to remain connected and to cherish all that was ever good in our relationships. In our family, it is not uncommon for a former spouse to attend a holiday meal. And, most importantly, we welcome new members every year and anyone that is brought by one of us is treated with affection by everyone else as soon as they walk through the door. It so touched my heart when my Dad, Charles Stuelke, stopped us in the middle of dinner to make a special announcement to welcome our new guests this year and one of those new guests was my sons boyfriend, John. As my sister-in-law Lesia pointed out to me, you and all that you love will always be safe here. We dont vote the same, or attend the same church, or eat the same food, but ultimately we are secure and loved when we are with each other and, for that, I am eternally grateful.
