This past weekend I was provided with an opportunity to attend a football camp hosted by one of the top stars in the NFL. My mission was to get some time with him to plead that he and his teammates display gold in September to help increase childhood cancer awareness. With about 400 kids at this camp it was difficult to approach this player; he was constantly taking pictures with everyone and interacting with so many people. At the end of the first day I saw that he was getting ready to leave and there was no one else around him. I figured this was my chance. I went up to him as he was walking to the golf cart to leave and I had five minutes alone with him to tell him about Cole and my mission to increase awareness in his memory. He was sincerely sympathetic to my story. I gave him a gold ribbon pin and asked if he would wear it in postgame interviews in September. He said he would. I also gave him a folder detailing more about Cole and my mission to get gold in the NFL. The folder also included a letter to present to his team’s front office asking them to display gold in September. As they drove him away in the golf cart I saw that he immediately opened the folder and began reading the letters. The next day one of the organizers of the camp told me that this NFL star had gone through all of the material I gave him and he was deeply touched. I hope to hear from him soon, and I dream that he heeds our call for gold in September to help raise awareness of Childhood Cancer. I did my best, now we will wait and see. One player, one team at a time, we will keep on reaching out until the NFL and MLB understand that we will not let up until there is as much gold in September as there is pink in October.
