This past weekend I went to Washington State to visit my parents. My dad, who is 90, had a stroke in February and is slowly gliding downhill. I am not sure if this was my last visit with my father on this side of heaven or not. While many things were very touching about this visit, none was more touching than my dad clasping my arm with remarkable strength as I was about to leave and repeatedly and with tears telling me how much he loved me. I will remember it for as long as I live. As I reflected on this moment, I realized that for me this was just a sweet moment, not a bittersweet one. My dad has, for as long as I can remember, made it clear to me that he loves me. He has shown me this in words. He has shown me this in deed. And not just from time to time, but regularly. Dads, don’t get to the end of your life and then try to convince your children that you love them. I simply cannot fathom what it would be like to hear those words from my father if it had been for the very first time. Communicate your love today and someday your words will have the strength of sweet remembrance rather than confusion mixed with sorrow. My father led me to Christ when I was 6. He has loved me for 63 years. I am the beneficiary of the strength of his love.
