This past weekend Yo Gotti performed at Minglewood Hall to a sold out crowd. Yo Gotti, whose given name is Mario Mims, is a native Memphian and is playing to large crowds throughout the U.S. He recently appeared on Arsenio Hall, the BET Awards, and also has been nominated for numerous awards including Grammy nominations. With that said, my sources tell me that two different elected officials tried to get Mayor Wharton to give Gotti the key to the city and got no response. Now when Justin Timberlake, who does not live in Memphis and has made some very ugly comments about Memphis recently, was performing here a couple of weeks ago Wharton declared it JT Day. It is not a racial issue, but it is an issue of how this Mayor refuses to connect to a large part of his population. Can you imagine if Mayor Wharton had appeared at the concert and gave the key to the city to Gotti, there would have been a couple thousand new Wharton fans in the audience. However short sighted politics is what keeps a city divided.
