This past weekend was a doozy! The overt plan was to spend two days diving shipwrecks in the Channel Islands and northern Santa Barbara Channel. The covert plan was to propose to my dive buddy and sweetheart of half-a-decade, at depth and hopefully record the happy event. We boarded the D/V PEACE in Ventura Harbor and after loading gear I managed to get Ken Kollwitz, head of CIDA and charter master on the trip, alone and ask for his assistance in popping the question at depth. Excellent fellow that Ken is, he enthusiastically agreed. First dive site was the wreck of the SM-1, a mobile drill rig that went down in 1961. Visibility was green and about 12-foot due to the surge and swells from a Baja hurricane, still it was good enough. I informed Ken I would pop the question on the next dive to the wreck. Exciting times were made a bit more interesting with the report by one of the other divers of an 8-foot Great White Shark fly-by during his safety stop. What could possibly go wrong? ;-) The recording of the event at 80-feet in the gloom– heavily edited – is shown. Many thanks to Ken Kollwitz for his deep water documentation. To Walter Marti for his always excellent editing. And to the crew of the dive boat PEACE – Captain Eric Bowman, Steve and Becci in the galley and James, Cameron and Danny on deck. They provided outstanding support of Cindy’s and my next step toward Total Enlightenment!
