This patient(name withheld) was sent by his doctor to a private - TopicsExpress

This patient(name withheld) was sent by his doctor to a private lab to do a full blood count. This is the result of the blood work. I was shocked when the lab guy did a stool MCS and found E.Coli in the stool and now went ahead to write a prescription for levofloxacin 500mg daily X 10/7.(see prescription attached). Questions?? 1, why did the lab guy write a prescription after the lab work? 2, Does he have the patient medication profile and medical history? 3, patient may be allergic to Levofloxacin or may be on other medications that may conflict with Levofloxacin. 4,Why did the pharmacist honor a sheet of paper representing a prescription? 5, Was the patient properly informed or clerked by the pharmacist? I asked the patient why didnt you take the result back to the doctor? He said his doctor would have done the same thing or would have chosen Septrin and charged the hell out of him....hmmmmm. I said but your doctor knows more about your medical history and may be in a better position to advise you on the results. For example how did the lab guy determine the duration of the antibiotics to be 10 days and not 5 days or 7 days? What is going on in this country? Insanity everywhere! -Lack of regulation. There is not even an effective regulatory body anywhere. - Where there is no regulations at all, then we ask where are the sanctions? -When patients end up in the hospitals after complications from visits to the lab guy, pharmacists and Babalawos, the attending Dr does not document his findings and report to the appropriate authorities for onward discipline and sanctions. It is very unprofessional for a medical doctor or attending doctor to examine a patient with complications from receiving treatments from pharmacists, lab scientists Nurses....(Babalawos(Herbalists) are even licensed to diagnose, treat and dispense herbs and concoctions...). I strongly THINK regulatory bodies or authorities should be 100% PRIVATIZED. In saner climes, regulatory authorities are NOT under any govt agencies knowing fully well that govts dont know how to run businesses or organizations e.g NNPC, NEPA, NITEL, Nigeria Airways, NAFDAC, PCN, MDCN, NMLSCN, NANNM..... Etc
