This photo describes what a sweat test is. a sweat test measures the concentration of chloride excreted in sweat and is a diagnostic test for CF. People with CF have two to five times the normal amount of chloride in their sweat. Unfortunately due to the result of a sweat test, it has been a bit of an emotional week-Noahs cousin Orlagh aged 13 had a sweat test on Monday to outrule CF due to specific symptoms she had which are consistent with CF; to name a few are type one diabetes, Gastro-oesphageal reflux, sinus problems, gastro issues and basically the fact that her mum is a known CF carrier. Unfortunately on tues Orlaghs parents received a call to say her sweat test was 60. 60 or over leans towards a diagnosis of CF. The reason why it probably hasnt presented itself before now is because she carries one classic mutation like Noah (delta f508) and another milder mutation which either has been identified in one of the 1800 mutations there is or one that maybe science has not yet identified. Orlagh had a sequence of tests yesterday but will not know for definite whether she is a carrier of CF with an abnormally high sweat test or whether she does have CF untill genetic bloods are back. We are all hoping for a positive outcome and will not let this ruin the christmas spirit. Regardless of this Orlagh is being the most mature teenager with the most inspiring attitude! However the most heartbreaking thing is if she does have a diagnosis of CF, we will be advised that it isnt a good idea for her and Noah to have contact because of cross infection between CF sufferers. As the pictures demonstrate; these two dudes are inseparable so we are hoping this will never be a bridge that Orlaghs parents and Noahs parents will ever have to cross!
