This photo shows a very familiar sight!! I was sent there in 1981 because although some single women were lucky enough to get support to keep their babies for many families the stigma was still so great that families believed they were saving their daughters from ruining their lives. My firstborn, my son Michael was born in the building pictured here. I was 18 ! Those who like to focus on the colourful and wacky aspect of their assumptions about my faith might consider how and why at a young age I came to understand the Catholic church was not there for me and searched til I found something that made sense and fed my soul.. The cruelty was gone in the 80s apart from the cruelty of being sent away when you are at your most vulnerable and most need friends and family. The one positive was the solidarity amongst the girls. Ive been lucky, I found Michael when he was 19 .We have a good relationship for which Im very grateful but I can never be the mam likewise with my beautiful little grandson Benjamin.. Im blood but not granny..adoption is a life sentence!! And had I been born 20 or 30 years earlier.. I would now be wondering if my baby was one of those dumped in a septic tank!!! Getting information wont be easy, even in the 80s we were given false names and fake addresses to which and from where we could receive and send post. The secrecy machine would have been the envy of the KGB. I learned to walk down a corridor and hear my false name called from behind and turn around in response.. That does something to your psyche!! Maybe thats where my thirst for justice and fight for equality began..?
