This picture of Phyllis Naidoo was taken by Raylene Captain-Hasthibeer. It was used by the ANC in its official commemoration and memorials. It remains my favourite picture. Rajesh Jantilal says its the only picture he has seen of her smiling in that way. He, Max Singh, Viroshen Chetty and Rafs Mayet have photographed her beautifully on many occasions. (Needless to say I was the recipient of that smile and Raylene captured the intimate moment.) The picture was taken at the Davenport Centre after we had breakfast at the old Badgers. Phyllis had to pop out for a smoke. Her Footprints in Grey Street have immortalised the Casbah in literature. We miss enormously.
