This picture of a D-day veteran returning to Omaha Beach is really striking. It speaks to the lasting power a single moment in our collective memory can have; without words, we can all grasp at least a small fraction of what hes trying to convey in this very private moment. So even decades later, in the collective consciousness D-day remains clear and present. At the same time, in the back of the photo is a house and the beach itself is clean and clear; devoid of anything remotely resembling a war. And so Im also caught off guard by how invisible it all is. That if he wasnt there, I would never have known it was Omaha Beach; never have even considered the possibility that there could be so much history behind the sands there. Maybe it comes back around to the juxtaposition of how actions that seem so (and can be) life-defining in the moment are ultimately very small in the large span of time. That a war which consumed the attention, resources, and lives of the human race has, only decades later, become invisible in our day-to-day lives. Really remarkable. I didnt really articulate what I wanted to but I cant quite find the right words so Ill leave it at that for now.
