This piece intrigues me: inducing clinical death, meaning no registered brain activity, in order to give doctors more time to revive patients. It quotes one medical ethicist as saying, “If this works, what they’ve done is suspended people when they are dead and then brought them back to life, but also describes this as slowing metabolism in dying patients — so which is it, then? So many interesting questions. Ive long maintained that all those people — and there seem to be so many who make this claim that I suspect, in many cases, its exaggerated — who have died and been brought back to life are misspeaking: manifestly, if you can be brought back, you did not die. Most scientists and doctors familiar with the science and empirical evidence will say that dying is not a threshold, exactly, but rather a process. But if what the ethicist says is true, what are the theological, philosophical and moral implications of raising people from the dead? Personally, I maintain that its false to say that people are dead if they can be revived — otherwise, resurrection is breaking out all over! But Id like to hear your thoughts, especially those of you who work in medical, emergency or life-sciences fields.
