This piece is extremely lucid and well thought out. Unfortunately, most likely preaching to the choir. I think its incumbent upon US (by us I mean white people) to let our white brothers and sisters know that black men and women and other people of color actually DO exist in the real world; theyre not just some figments of Hollywood + RIAA + NFL + your evening news. Its actually not funny or cool or edgy to appropriate someone elses dialect or mannerisms, especially not in such a caricatured way, and especially not when theyre part of a community thats already facing so much REAL discrimination (housing, jobs, schools, court system, police, etc, etc). Its funny for you, but then when youre done with your little blog post, you get to log out of Wordpress and go to the corner store and be white again. What could possibly have been going through these Thug Kitchen peoples minds? I believe some of these people are decent people, but just woefully uninformed about how the world works. I dont usually post about topics like this, where its not really my place to say anything, but I think in a way it IS my place. Its on US to not just stand around and do nothing. I feel like as a white male in America I probably have the most privilege out of any class and I need to take advantage of it to actually DO something and not just accept that some people are ignorant. Ill start by saying this: its really not cool to try to co-opt some black lingo that you hear on TV for the sake of irony, youre embarrassing our race (not that we need the help), and frankly youre embarrassing me as a human being. You know what would get you the MOST respect and kudos from people from all races and backgrounds? Just be yourself! Be yourself and let everyone else be themselves. Thank you and good night.
