This pisses me off because I have seen this happen first hand. This year I was a parent chaperone for one of Londons field trips and her teacher (white woman) gave me all of the black girls to chaperone. When she assigned the kids she mentioned to me that this one kid was bad and that I would have to be very firm with her. It angered me because I felt like she was labeling the kid. Come to find out, this kid was being raised by her grandparents because both parents are in prison. How do I know that? Because another parent told me. How did she know that? Because the teacher told her (she is a room parent). Long story short, this kid was a sweetie pie and she and London became close friends. At the end of the day, dont allow these teachers and educators to label your children. As parents, get involved and stay involved. Volunteer as the room parent. Chaperone field trips. Do pop up visits...whatever it takes to ensure your childs educational success.
