This poem is inspired by: “Kubla Khan” by Samuel Taylor Coleridge “Xanadu” by Neil Peart And perhaps a memory or two Our Xanadu My journey would soon begin where his had finally ended, So I listened to how his life had been painfully upended. He told me how he had fed on her fields of honeydew... And discovered her passion and her love so true. He told me how he drank from her milk of Paradise, And entered her Pleasure Dome beyond her caves of ice. He had found and loved this beautiful Xanadu, but she stole his soul and broke his heart in two. He told me to forget the journey or I’d end up the same. But I didn’t listen and began my journey from which I came. No matter how sour it might become – her milk of Paradise, I must rise and fall on my own and seek her caves of ice. So I traveled to the New City, landscaped with steel mountains. I quenched my thirst aplenty from all of the man-made fountains. With a couple bags in hand I walked the streets alone, Knowing soon that I would reach her Pleasure Dome. Wondering what I had to trade to taste her milk of Paradise, Perhaps I would be the one who could melt her caves of ice. For a couple of years I had the chance to absorb her mystery, But soon the petals turned to thorns, and I became her history. From her passion to my pain, from this love to this bitterness, I knew I had to leave this place from which I would never miss. I learned how the sweetness turned to sour – her milk of Paradise, And no matter how I tried I could not melt her caves of ice. My journey soon led me to an old tavern with my friend, So he listened to how my love like his came to a tragic end. We laughed and cried and drank aplenty the brew. So much sweeter it was than her bitter fields of honeydew. We learned how time had fouled her milk of Paradise, And we promised never again to venture towards her caves of ice. - The Excommunicated Dreamer
