This poem that one of our daughters wrote to honor Giles on his birthday moves me to tears. I am so blessed in family!!!!!!! 80 years ago On September 27, 1933 Giles Martin Schanen Entered the World, A humble farmer’s baby. He shared his mother’s birthday. He shared his father’s eyes. His spirit was sweet, his demeanor was kind; None of that was a surprise. He loved his 2 brothers and 2 sisters. He worked the farm and the fields. But it was in the school house. This child’s special gift began to yield. Destined to be a Texas Aggie This young man wanted to be a vet! But God had bigger plans Young Giles didn’t know just yet! He was soon off to Galveston, Texas Earning a BIG M.D.! Dr. Giles Martin Schanen (first in his class) Obstetrician and Gynecologist, to be! He soon became a parent. Had 3 sweet girls and an inquisitive son. He lived in LA, OH and Texas But finally South Carolina was the one. Life continued to reveal itself There was a different plan. With a heart this big and a soul this kind Life wanted to SHARE THIS MAN! A pretty and smart candy striper was waiting She had great parents and 2 handsome boys When Giles looked at this sweet young thing It filled his parts with joys! In just a few short weeks They knew it was much more than a hunch That this crew should somehow form a family Thats the way we became the Schanen bunch! Giles and Jo Jo added Giles Jr, And started down the parenting path! Days filled with homework, beach trips, sports, yard work, dr. visits, 7 Kids, Multiple Dogs, Cats and snakes - you do the math! This southern doctor was a real gentleman. Kind to patients, friends, family and strangers too. He always smiled and did the right thing, Even in the times when life felt like a zoo! All work and no play made Giles a dull boy, So hobbies he did begin. Afterall, life ain’t worth living if it don’t have a touch of sin! This doctor liked to hunt, travel and read. He sipped Jack Daniels, smoking hams and meat. But growing SC’s largest pumpkin ever Was his proud, blue-ribbon winning feat! The days became weeks. The weeks became years. Brown hair thinned and turned grey. There were weddings, grand babies, travel abroad, So many treasured times and days. Despite the changes and passage of time, Some things never changed. Calm, wise, optimistic, principled Those things steadily remained. To everyone who knows him You know this to be true: Our Giles Schanen is a prince of a man Who brings out the best in you. If you measure life in purpose Count Your friends, not candles. Reach out a helping hand to people, When life seems more than they can handle. If you’re patient, when tested. Honest, loyal, generous, and follow the Golden Rule, Then you understand why we all think our Daddy is so cool. He’s humble He’s happy See’s the good; not the nappy. He walks what he talks Saying “ work hard, Marry well, strive to always learn, And secrets are something you never tell. He says let others have the glory, It’s better to be liked than to be right. You’re blessed to be an American, And ain’t much worth a fight! He tells us the secret to a marriage, is “Happy wife, happy life!” He says “Dont kick the bike when you fall off” You will hurt your foot and the bike wont care. And we often see him end his day With a kiss, I love you and a prayer. Please join me in a toast Whether you live next door or traveled many miles, Celebrating the life of our Sweet Daddy The One and Only Honorable Giles!
