This post has taken me a while to get round to but I hope you’ll understand the reason I felt it was important to share it. In the week before I came away on holiday, I had two new clients referred to me. I will be working with neither. Having carried out an initial consultation, my belief was that their interests would be better served by someone other than me. In one case, the person needed a diagnosis of an issue – I am not qualified to do this. In the other case, yes there were areas I could have addressed with the client but my gut instinct was that there was a more serious underlying issue which needed specialist treatment by someone else, who could also address the areas I would have worked on. From my perspective, the best approach for that client would be to work closely with one professional and I co-ordinated an introduction, hand-over and supported my “non-client” through the process. The moral of the story….I am not a doctor or qualified to diagnose issues. I do however feel that I have a duty of care towards everyone I consult/work with. Given a diagnosis by an appropriate professional, if it falls within my expertise I will happily work with a client, and any other professionals from whom they receive treatment, and do my utmost for them. More and more these days, I hear of Personal Trainers recommending exclusion of food groups, taking an armoury of specific supplements or working with physical issues beyond their skill set. I see no shame in admitting where your professional boundaries lie and calling on the experience of another qualified professional – to me, and all other trainers here at Custom Fitness, this is part of customer service. Be mindful of advice you are given and if in any doubt, speak to your doctor or other fully qualified medical professional. Lisa
