This post is a little uncomfortable for me to make as I have many good friends on both sides of the Tiahrt/Pompeo race, but I feel that it needs to be said. Over the last week or so I’ve been seeing a lot of Pompeo supporters point out problems with Tiahrts record, and a lot of Tiahrt supporters point out problems with Pompeos record. Sure, there is plenty of spin, but sadly there’s a lot of truth to the criticisms of BOTH candidates as well. While thinking this over, I saw a random Huelskamp TV ad interspersed with many other political ads and thought about how nice itd be to have someone like him to vote FOR in this race. Then an important question came to mind: where were our Kansas Republican leaders when Congressman Huelskamp was being kicked off of important committees (Agriculture and Budget) by Speaker Boehner for standing up for conservative values? Where was Congressman Pompeo when his fellow Republican Kansas congressman needed his voice? He decided to stay quiet and let Tim Huelskamp get thrown under the bus. A couple months later, Speaker Boehner named Congressman Pompeo to the House Intelligence Committee where he supports the Patriot Act and advances an interventionist foreign policy. What about Todd Tiahrt? He now talks about ousting Boehner, if elected, and having a Huelskamp type legislative style. But where was Todd Tiahrt when Tim Huelskamp needed the Kansas Republican National Committeemans voice to defend him against Speaker Boehners bullying? Well, Committeeman Tiahrt told the Associated Press at the time that he hoped Huelskamp would make amends and get his seat back. Hardly sounds like the vocal defense that a conservative champion deserves. Why wait until now to start doing so? He could have used his voice, he could have stood up to his fellow party leaders. But then again, he could have done that as a Congressman too. Instead he supported the Patriot Act and supported an interventionist foreign policy. Some of you have asked me why Im not all that vocal or excited about the Tiahrt/Pompeo race. Now you know part of the answer. I do know who I will be voting for, but you probably won’t see me bragging about it very often.
