This post is a salute to my sister CARLA in Florida. She does a lot of work with the MANATEES off the Gulf of Mexico at Homossassa Springs Wildlife State Park. Manatees are large gray marine mammals with paddle-like flippers. These sea cows graze in shallow water and are herbivores. But theyre endangered because they often experience violent collisions with boats. Carla helps nurture and rehabilitate them while they are recovering from their injuries. I think theyre so cool but I can never quite buy the legend that early sailors mistook them for mermaids. Say what?
