This post is from a fellow PSCer in Finland who was just listed for transplant even though she still feels fine. This shows that Canada could completely overhaul its organ donation system with a few legislative / philosophical changes. When one thinks of how many lives could be saved... It is very rare that someone would die due to organ donor shortage here, Ive been told. The process works quite efficiently and there is a Scandinavia-wide network of organ supply, in case there is an urgent need for one, which might not be available in the country where the recipient is in, i.e. if there is someone in dire need of an organ in Sweden and there are no organs there right then, a Scandinavia-wide search is initiated and the donor organ could come from another Nordic country. I guess there are 3 main factors contributing to the high liver transplant success rate in the Nordic countries: 1) awareness and efficiency of the medical staff to make the process functional, 2) in Finland everyone is by default an organ donor, unless the person had indicated his/her unwillingness to donate organs. Of course this is verified by a organ donor will or by asking the family members if the person had given consent to being organ donor, 3) people are often not terminally ill when put on the list, which gives them better chances to recover and overcome obstacles of the procedure.
