This post may upset a few local musicians.... Well GOOD! When I was a teenager figuring all this band stuff out, the first guys I played with were simply lame. I remember this one guy in the first band I joined had been taking lessons for about a year. He knew a few chords then...ok. I had no idea what the habits of a good musician were...yet. At this point I had taken my first couple of guitar lessons and spent so much time in my bedroom trying to get good at it that I passed this guys level 3 months into my playing. What I DID get from that first band was a first taste of egotism out of the guy Im speaking about. I was a fat kid who was ridiculed by and didnt look cool to the popular kids in high school, but I could already rip this guy a new one on guitar. (I wasnt the best in the school, but in the band I was in...oh yeah!) He was always wanting to fire me so he could bring in one of his no-playing-worth-a-crap popular buddies and they could bask in the stage lights together and find their glory in front of all of the school. Needless to say, NONE of these yahoos went on to be players in real life which is good because THEY NEVER ACTUALLY GAVE A SHIT ABOUT THEIR AUDIENCE. When you decide youre going to be in a band that will play in public, make sure your playing and mind-set are up to snuff! If you play just so you can feel the lights on you and have EVERYBODY adore you, you are simply an idiot and are hurting other musicians with your attitude. Those people adoring you are probably annoyed at how bad your band sucks because YOU didnt take the time to assess your OWN playing as well as the chemistry of the band, or even correct song selection.(In other words, are you playing songs youre GOOD at?) Being realistic about your playing and your band is important to the people paying to see you. You can dress up in a costume, put on Kiss-style make-up, have the best pa and light show and all that, but if you dont pay attention to the heart of what youre doing, the actual music, then YOU DONT BELONG ON A STAGE!!! There are people who bust their asses at their job and life in general looking for a good time to relieve the stress of the grind. They plunk down their money to go to the show, and there you are with your crappy band getting off on the illusion that they love you while they consider leaving or waiting for the next band they actually came to see. Have another drink you moron. How nice that must be for the people that just paid to see you. You havent done your job... You just hustled money from your audience for NOTHING! The side effect? YOU are stuck in the same rut forever.... I can name a WHOLE bunch of good bands in our region that DO care about what they do in front of an audience and put the sweat and blood into the music to make it OUTSTANDING for the people coming to see them. Are YOU in one of these bands? You tell ME.....
