This press release came out today.... Hip Donelson Partners with Metro Police Christmas Charities $5,500 Gift Announced to the Charity ________________________________________ Nashville, TN November 19, 2014: Hip Donelson has announced a partnership with the Metro Police Christmas Charities to collect new and unwrapped toys, and larger stuffed animals for their annual Christmas Basket program. In addition, this year Hip Donelson announced a gift in the amount of $5,500.00 to the police charity. “We are thrilled to be able to provide this amount of funding to the organization. It is amazing to see these children’s faces when you deliver their food and toys on Christmas Eve morning”, said Frank Trew, President of Hip Donelson. The funds are being generated from the Hip Donelson general fund, and from reserves from the Piedmont Natural Gas SNAPBack program from the Farmers Market that ended in October. Piedmont has been ardent supporter of providing food for those less fortunate. These dollars are designated 100 % for food purchases. This is the 52nd year for this program, started by then Sgt. and former police Chief Joe Casey. Officers nominate families they encounter throughout the year, and though not every family nominated can be assisted, careful consideration is given to ensure that all who are assisted are in need. Families are not eligible to receive baskets on consecutive years. Each Christmas Eve at 5:30 a.m., officers and hundreds of civilians gather to pick up and then deliver these baskets to families all across Nashville. Many families make this delivery a yearly tradition, and speaking from personal experience, it is an amazing way to start Christmas! You cannot imagine the joy of delivering Christmas to children who would never have a Christmas but for the generosity of others. This year, 177 families and 50 elderly will receive baskets, and the organization has budgeted for up to 10 emergency donations that may come up at the last minute Hermitage Police Precinct Commander Michele Donegan has served as the Chief Elf since 2011. She and a dedicated staff of officers go on special assignment after Thanksgiving to prepare all the baskets and ensure there are enough toys for each child and food for each family. “The ability to provide four bushel-baskets of food and toys to over 177 families is a huge undertaking,” said Commander Donegan. The money from the program comes from generous donations from local civic groups, small businesses, police employees, and major corporations. For the past 23 years, Boswell’s Harley Davidson has sponsored a Toy Parade to raise funds. It collected over $15,000 last year. “There is absolutely nothing more heartwarming than to make a delivery of food and toys on Christmas Eve morning to a family who is experiencing a difficult time. To see their faces light up, see their smiles, and exchange those hugs, spreading joy – that is what it is all about,” said Donegan. “We are, especially in need of larger sized new stuffed animals to top off each child’s basket” said Frank Trew. “Our goal is to provide 500 animals this year, so we have setup several convenient locations for drop offs in Donelson”. New toys that are not holiday wrapped and larger sized stuffed animals can be dropped off at the following Donelson locations beginning Nov. 1: Cedarstone Bank-Donelson 2900 Lebanon Road Treasures Consignment 2628 Old Lebanon Road Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Ace Hardware-Donelson 2730 Lebanon Road Seven days a week FiftyForward 108 Donelson Pike Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon For more information on the program, or to make a donation, visit the Hip Donelson website hipdonelson.org About Metro Police Christmas Charities: Metro Police Christmas Charities is the organization behind this program, and it is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit, with officer Cindy Huffines serving as its president.
