This quarter we focused on the child well-being aspiration that “children are cared for and protected.” We offered a podcast to Child Champions and Program Partners that features Aj Sailiai, an active member of World Vision’s Youth Empowerment Program (now known as the Youth Empowerment Network). Aj described his transformation from “just getting through high school” to “thriving in high school, and becoming a change agent.” Also on the podcast, Leonetta Elaiho, national director of youth and community engagement, spoke about the importance of developmental relationships and how World Vision fosters and supports this work. Jennifer Rios, a family involvement coordinator from Tyee Park Elementary School in Lakewood, Washington, shared on the podcast about the dire poverty evident at her school. Out of nearly 450 students, 97 percent are eligible for free meals and 2 percent receive reduced-price meals, leaving only 1 percent able to fully pay for breakfast and lunch. In response to this great need, World Vision has provided family food kits to go home with the kids during the weekend, along with books, recreational supplies, and much more. All these remarkable stories remind us of the wonderful work that is being done right here in our own backyards.
