This quotation has appeared on my page several times, and it reflects grest ignorance. It assumes everyone used to produce their own food, which is incorrect. Urban markets have existed for centuries. In cities, often gardening or even owning a dairy goat was impossible for a common laborer. Green grocers and other grocery suppliers have existef for centuries. What the supermarket did was it brought all the food resources under one roof. You no longer had to go froom vendor to vendor, shop to shop. An excellent example of an urban market would be The West Side Market in Cleveland, OH. There are multiple stalls throughout! Multiple butchers, fruit and vegetable vendors, cheese vendors, etc. It predates supermarkets.
