This quote seemed apropos for this week: “A few days after my departure [from Jamaica] the Indians rebelled and refused to bring [Columbus and his men] the accustomed food. The Admiral [Columbus] had the caciques summoned and told them that he was astonished at this discontinuance of supplies, since they knew very well that he had come there at God’s command. He said that he was very annoyed with them and would show His anger that night by signs that would appear in the heavens. That night there was an eclipse of the moon, which was almost completely obscured, and the Admiral told them that the cause of this was God’s anger with them for no longer supplying him food, which in fact they did, until the ship which I had sent with provisions arrived.” (316) -Diego Méndez, Columbus’ accomplice quoted in J.M. Cohen’s “Four Voyages of Christopher Columbus.”
