This rant is a good one, so listen up. I am already outraged that retailers are open on Thanksgiving day. I said it last year and Ill say it again this year and every year until it ends. Whats MORE unspeakable is that now I found out that malls actually FINE retailers if they choose to close on Thanksgiving Day. Do you know why they can do that? Because we are greedy people who think that the INANIMATE objects we want to buy (and dont need!!) will not be there waiting for us the next day. Those of us who go shop on that day-- have we thought about the poor employees that literally have no option but to go? Because standing up for their rights and choosing to stay home could cost them their jobs? Because the precious days they have with family are being attacked by consumers who need a discount on socks? God knows people who work retail are already bombarded daily by ungrateful people (a blanket statement, I realize that) who rarely appreciate them anyway. Mix that up with a little sale and a holiday madness and youve got people LITERALLY fighting and getting hurt over merchandise! The two main arguments I hear are: 1. But its better than waking up at 3 am to go stand outside in the freezing cold. 2. But I take my family with me and we enjoy it together. HELLO! No one says you have to stand outside in the freezing cold!! All your deals are available on Cyber Monday (trust me! I tried it last year!!) AND! Again! We have forgotten about the retail employees who dont get to take their families to work with them! You think youre safe because no one in your family works retail? Trust me, it will impact you one day! Maybe youll have a teenager who takes up a seasonal job and before you know it, youve missed precious moments with them, too. This whole opening on Thanksgiving day was unheard of a couple of years ago... Know what I think? Christmas wont be safe either in the near future. As long as you go out and buy on the days they are open, you will give them more and more reason to push for longer hours and less family. Come on people, try to stay home. Think about others. As the saying goes-- Only in America do people go out and buy a bunch of stuff they dont need after theyve spent a day being thankful for what they have. Now we are buying stuff INSTEAD of even being thankful. Such a shame. Dont make this a profitable game for companies. Please.
