This really is a breaking news story for anyone who has watched the back and forth legal battles involving wolf hunting and the heated wolf-hunting debates in Michigan or the Great Lake States of Wisconsin and Minnesota. In a surprise move late this afternoon a Federal judge in a 111 page legal decision returned full federal protection for wolves in all three states under the Endangered Species Act. As of today the sport of wolf hunting and wolf trapping for fur or trophy has ended. The judge basically said earlier actions were arbitrary and capricious and violated the Endangered Species Act and questioned the validity of earlier pro-hunting/trophy arguments. Safe to say the legal battles will continue. But tonight Canis lupus is once again under federal protection.
