This really isnt new news; there are many studies of children presenting to emergency departments with dog bite injuries (including our own at Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia). Weve long known that most biting dogs are familiar (owned by the family or by relatives or neighbors) and that most bites are provoked. But I applaud the recommendation that new dog owners/guardians/pet parents be required to take a class on responsible ownership (hopefully taught by someone who actually understands risks and normal dog and child behavior). One question here is how the authors defined provocation - though I have not read the study yet, I will try to summarize it when I do.
