This recent thread on being called DOC wants me to give a witness. For those of us on the green side, especially in the infantry, DOC is earned. Until you prove yourself, a lot of Marines will call you Corpsman. (at least they did 30 years ago). During an exercise in Korea, one such Marine got whacked in the face with a tree branch about 0100 during a company movement. I was called up. Worst corneal abrasion I ever saw. Didnt need stain and a black light. Even with the red lens of a GI flashlight you could see half his cornea was missing, like you peeled a big chunk of mica. I put the drops in his eye, some antibiotic ointment and bandaged him, and assured him in 3 hours it would hurt like hell again, and to come wake me up (if we were allowed to sleep yet) and Id put more drops in. Helped him get up and get his pack on and he said Thanks DOC. I was glad it was November and the wind was howling on top of that hill, because my eyes were watering anyway. He was the last Marine in the Company to accept me. Is this a true story? Of course.. If it was a lie, it would have started with This is no shit........
