This reminds me of my grandfather who starts out almost every story about his life with (in mandarin), In china, we have a saying... (idiom). He always speaks with these non colloquial idioms that require lengthy explanations for me-- both because of the linguistic complexity and because of the reference to a time that is far beyond my immediate experience (China during the monarchy and the civil war). Hes one of the umpteenth reasons I wanted to be a bilingual SLP... because language and culture and family are so intertwined and I hope all children with disabilities can find a safe and loving environment with their family, away from the judgement of society. But how can they if someone doesnt help teach them their home language? Katherine G Vasbinder i think youll understand~
