This resonates a lot. Things are better than they were. They should and will get better still. And ultimately, the point of legal rights is that someone elses feelings - including their version, their culture-bound, moment-bound version of their religion - should not interfere with others right to live full lives. But, if we know anything from all the civil rights struggles that have gone before and continue, legal rights are not enough to create fairness and equality. One thing you find when exposing your self to the world: some will react as badly or worse than you ever imagined. But others will react far, far better. They cared about Kathryn, they explained, and they cared about Tracy, too. They said they believed that if Kathryn got sick, Tracy should be allowed to visit her in the hospital. They thought everybody should be allowed to designate one “person” — the loved one with whom they’d legally decided to share their lives. It was obvious to them that Tracy and Kathryn could be each other’s “people.” But marriage, they said, was something holy and biblical, something whose definition shouldn’t be changed.
