This seemed blatantly obvious to me when I read about the research that scientists were saying proved that autistic kids lacked social-cognitive abilities. In the study, I think referred to as the Sally-Anne Test one puppet - Sally - puts a marble in a basket then leaves the stage. A second puppet - Anne - takes the marble and puts it in a box. Children are asked, Where will Sally look for the marble? Children who stated that Sally would look in the box, rather than the basket, were thought to have a lack of cognitive ability in this particular area and this is seen as correlated with autism. The problem with this, as I see it, is the assumption that autistic kids more often answer the box because they cant individuate their own observations from the Sally character.... But what if that isnt the case at all? What if the autistic children are just so sensitive to changes in their environment that they would, if they were Sally, be much more likelt to instinctively KNOW to look in the box instead of the basket? And why has no one considered this possibility? Because it seems totally obvious to me.
