This short clip is from the end of a half-hour conversation with a young man named Sarea, from India, who has become an atheist since coming to the United States 12 years ago, and reading a book by atheist author Richard Dawkins. I have met many people recently who claim to be atheists after having been influenced by authors such as Dawkins. It might seem like a waste of time to talk with people who are so radically opposed to the things of God that they would deny His existence altogether, but I would disagree. In general, people who have read atheistic books or taken the time to watch atheistic videos, etc. at least have some sort of spiritual interest, even if they claim to deny it. Many are from religious backgrounds who realize the implications of a God who would hold them accountable, so they actively look for reasons for unbelief. I wonder what is worse, someone who actively denies God or someone who doesn’t really care either way? I believe the opposite of love isn’t hate – its apathy. Someone who doesn’t care is harder to have a conversation with than someone who does care. I think Jesus’ words to the church of Laodicea apply here “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.” (Rev.3) Surea was very happy to talk, and in fact told me that religion is one of his favorite subjects to talk about, yet in the 12 years he has lived in the United States no one has reached out to talk about it with him. Let’s not rule out talking with atheists. God isn’t through with them yet! (The rest of the conversation is found on my blog at EverydayClub.blogspot)
