This short video clip shows something kinda cool …. But more on that in a second. CGI or computer generated FX are terms used a lot these days. Though as anyone who works in the industry will tell you, theyre often incorrectly used. I wasn’t sure about it myself, so asked around on one of the groups here on facebook, and in a nutshell true Computer Generated FX are those which are created entirely within the computer…… Seems sensible enough. For want of a better term, there’s also what I’d call Computer Assisted FX, and these are actually quite common but are often described as Computer Generated by folks unfamiliar with what goes into producing them….. Take this short video clip - which Ive slowed to half speed - as an example. It was actually two very quick shots in the episode which Ive put together. It’s from the season 1 episode, And The Sky Is Full Of Stars. It shows Michael O’Hare (Commander Sinclair) connected to that mind probing thingamabob. Theres a number of separate visual FX going on in this scene, three that I can recognise, but the one I want to focus on is those twirling lights moving around on the surface of his skin around both his eyes….. You have to be quick to notice them, and you might think they’re Computer Generated. But they’re not…… far from it in fact. A computer was certainly used to mix them up a bit and add them to the scene, but unless you work in the industry you might be surprised at just how the basic effect was created by Kevin Kutchaver…. Here’s how.. “The machine glow around Sinclairs eyes was made by taking a slide projector, aiming the light through a beer mug and photographing the light patterns off of a white wall.” Wow! I find that stuff fascinating, and it also highlights that even in the digital era, creating visual FX can sometimes still require a fair bit more skill and imagination than just pushing buttons as some believe. Edit: Just asked Kevin about this, and felt something he said was worth adding onto it....... I can feel another more detailed interview coming on. :) Remember, I am first and foremost a photographer, so that is always my first go-to solution. And I actually got the idea from the movie LifeForce where I believe, they were bouncing lasers off of Robbie Blalacks Star Wars Oscar!
