This short video shows global temperature anomalies from 1880 to 2010. The more red DOES NOT mean it is hotter. It means that the temperature in that area is different from what we expect from the normal average temperatures for those places. Meterologists/climatologist/weatherologists (last one I made up) have various ways where they have studied the the temperature of the past (of varying reliability :p). Among those that come to mind: - Some uncle-scientists measuring temperature in their lab in some Paris University corner two centuries ago. No really, local temperature collection from days gone by excited sciency people are very important before Climate change became an issue. - More globally, temperature is measured continuously by various research stations that have super-thermometers both on the ground, at various heights on tall towers, and on satellites that fly above our heads. The thermometers are also present in and on our oceans. These weatherologists also look into the past. They call themselves paleo-meteorologists (because now they look at the history through more buried and fossil-like objects. Interestingly, they use the gases trapped in many samples to tell both temperature and the air states (like how much oxygen and carbon dioxide etc) of the past - The growth of trees (chop VERY old trees down, look at the age rings, can tell how warm it was according to how much the tree grew) - Go to the poles. Dig out big ice poles (cylinder tubes) with super technology and analyse the contents with more super technology. The deeper bits tell us what happened long time ago. (Ice at the poles used to get layered down every year...and never melt). - Or go to many wetlands and dig out mushy peat cores - similar concept End of mini-of-the-head rant. I CAN NOT GUARANTEE THE SCIENTIFIC ACCURACY OF THE ABOVE STATEMENTS. But I do not lie. FHR
