This should be fascinating stuff to anyone who appreciates nature in the wild. And while it is certainly no laughing matter, time will tell how devastating this particular series of events will be, I have to laugh at the story of someone diving into a beautiful pool of clear water, not remembering that this is ICEland. Ok, so to the 99% of you who have never been there, what Eva Fallon and agree is most amazing is their absolute and total lack of warning signs and safety barriers. You can walk right up to the highest cliff, the largest waterfall, active volcano, hot spring, etc, and dangle your feet or jump in. While walking on a glacier, our tour guide points out a family with kids and dog that is hiking along the face of a tall, sheer cliff. He shakes his head and we wave our hands and yell some warnings but we are ignored. They are unaware they they are standing on the side of a massive pile of gravel, the stuff that glaciers churn up. Here in the US, walking past an outdoor smoking area at work, I pass signs on three sides of a picnic table warning me that this is a designated smoking area. In Iceland, they would assume that the large impossible to miss ashtray on the table would be clue enough. Same too about things that are too hot, too cold, or just crazy unstable.
